1. Candy Bones Theatre – Oopsie!
Dr. Professor wants to answer the question: Is it okay to make a mistake? When taking her
research to the audience, the Doctor fails again and again in hilarious ways. Together, the Professor and the audience find out how mistakes help us learn and make new
discoveries. This interactive story about growth mindset and the creative process is
brought to life through a seamless weaving of shadow puppetry, original music, tap dance,
physical comedy, and audience participation.
2. Green Thumb Theatre – Mixolydian
Bellevue, an 11-year-old Anishinaabe/Metisgirl, is on a journey through the woods.
Reconnecting with her culture and language, Bellevue is accompanied by her “imaginary
friend”, a shapeshifter named Thomas. Having recently lost her grandfather (Shoom),
Bellevue feels out of touch with the stories and words her Shoom used to share. Luckily,
with some help from ancestor Nokomis, Bellevue learns that Shoom’s knowledge lives
on in her, and there is more to her friend Thomas than meets the eye.
3. Hip Hop 101 – Metaphor
Rap, poetry, freestyle, turntablism, beatboxing, dance, and interactive music
come together in Hip-Hop 101. The show explores the history of hip-hop, looking at
how hip-hop culture has always shaped the communities it touches, from its roots in
African oral tradition to contemporary sounds. Through music, dance, and
participatory games, students explore themes of anti-racism, anti-bullying, self-
empowerment, acceptance, and celebration.
Metaphor’s Hip-Hop 101 is a pumped-up performance of positive hip-hop.
Ndidi Cascade is a Vancouver-born and based hip-hop vocalist of Nigerian-Italian-Irish-
Canadian heritage.
4. Ache Brasil (from Mount Pleasant)
Aché Brasil fuses Brazilian music, dance and capoeira (Afro-Brazilian martial arts and
acrobatics) into a dynamic and colourful performance. Our shows offer the
opportunity for students to learn a great deal about the culture, dances, tradition and
history of Brazil in an interactive fun atmosphere. Through performance, we
educate students about slavery and its roots and the impact that African people has had in
the Brazilian culture. Students will also learn the importance of the Amazon Forest and the
Native people’s influence in our culture. They will also learn some Portuguese words and
how a berimbau is made (one of the oldest instruments in the world). The performance
is done with authentic costumes, dances and live music of drums, Brazilian percussion and
vocals. The students become very inspired by the athletic abilities of our performers and
will have a chance to participate (dance or play percussion instruments) enhancing their
self-esteem.
5. HeARTbeat Theatre Productions – Hear, There Be Dragons!
HeARTbeat Theatre has been touring across North America since 2016. Our touring
performer has been a professional children’s entertainer for over 25 years. We are
currently touring a new production called Hear, There Be Dragons! The main story is
about a Deaf horse wrangler learning a new way to communicate with a misbehaving
horse. The show features the science of sound, the science of magic, a live bullwhip
demonstration, live storytelling, and a short movie that features a dragon and 2
chararacters who communicate using American Sign Language. We have been
working with Deaf and Hear Alberta throughout the creation process. They also
provided interpreter services for our Deaf actor during rehearsals and production.
